Theoretical question [Arabic music only, please]

25 posts in this topic

Let's say you've done bad, really bad. So bad that you are sentenced to life in prison.

While you are taken there a guard at the gate asks you this question: What 3 CDs of singers (no mix, just the singer/artist) you want to spend the rest of your life listening to in prison.

Who would be those 3 singers/artist.

I'll start.

My first choice might surprise some. It's not Fayrouz

Alright, the first choice is a tie between lady Fayrouz and 3awad Doo'7y. I love the guy (RIP).

Why is this limited to Arabic music only?

Good question.

Alright, how about we expand it to 3 artists per language.

For Italian, it will be Eros Ramazzotti as a first choice, for sure. Second would be Zucchero.

I still have two places for Arabic :)

For my second place in Arabic, I'm thinking of:

- Fareed Al-Atrash

- Mohammed Abdu

- Abu-Baker Salem

- Amer Deiab

Not for consideration in Arabic:

- Um Khalthoom. While I highly respect the lady and her work, she suffers from two major handicaps:

* Depth: Her work is rather limited in terms of number.

* Width: Her style of music is basically the same throughout that limited output.

- Abdul Whahab:

* This guy sux

* He is a big thief too. A fraud.

Good question.

Alright, how about we expand it to 3 artists per language.

How about, just 3 albums, in any language :P

Sounds like a good idea for a new thread.

I already have my first album ready. Go for it, man.

Cheers, AoD.

Wish a Mod or Admin removes the "Arabic music only, please" part in the title.

Wish no.2: Would be nice to see non-Arabic and non-English artists mentioned. Indian and French would be very cool.

As for albums...

This album, without an atom of doubt, is the greatest one ever created in the English language (according to me :)) ... Physical Graffiti by Led Zeppelin.

Amr Diab

I probably mentioned this before. Not only his music is a breath of fresh air to Arabic music, but what he produces breaks the mold of the traditional music we are used to. Innovative, creative comes to mind. Big kudos to him.

I'm really struggling to pick a favorite of those 4 gents. They are all great:

- Fareed Al-Atrash

- Mohammed Abdu

- Abu-Baker Salem

- Amer Deiab

My analysis:

- Fareed Al-Atrash: Some of his music is so high quality it will knock you down (Al-Rabee3 is one example). He is the closest thing to the angelic sound of lady Fayrouz. Maybe his origin, being a Syrian, has something to do with it (same culture, perhaps).

Mohammed Abdu

This gentleman suffers from the opposite of one of the aspects of Um Khalthoom short-comings: Depth.

This guy produces a lot! Like a well-oiled machine. Bang bang! Songs left & right. Most of it is lifeless and soulless. It reminds you of Abdul-Wahab. Just sound. No music. No art.

HOWEVER,

When he shines, he will knock you down! His good stuff, and there is plenty of it, will make you weak at the knee from its beauty. He has plenty of amazing work Plenty.

So far, for me, it's Fareed and Mohammed Abdu that are in for the second place.

Who will get the last place in Arabic music?

- Abu-Baker Salem

or

- Amer Deiab

My heart says "are you kidding?" Abu-Baker, of course.

But my mind say "I don't know, man".

Abu-Baker has that very charismatic sound to him. He attracts you like a bee to honey. But Amr Diab has the innovation, the freshness to his work.

Need to think about this one.
